Quarantine

Influenza B has struck at work.

One of the many interests of the company I work for is seniors homes. At one of them, Influenza B has struck. I was at this facility at 1730 on Friday when the Health Officials declared that the facility was under quarantine. All present were locked in and will not be able to leave until a clean bill of health has been passed. According to the Health Officials, Influenza B is very serious and could affect body functions. Yikes!

There are several people already sick, and all have been given treatment. So we are crossing our fingers and hoping this gets better real soon.

I managed to sneak some time on a computer at a nurse's station to write this. Anyway, take care and be back soon.

Steve.

Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone

A tribute to the unknown victims

We remember

When Heath Ledger died, his death was all over the internet, papers, magazines, what have you. Same for any celebrity or politician. But who remembers your friend or loved one who died a senseless death? For the most part, no one in the media. They are not Heath Ledger.

However, friends and loved ones do remember them. Washington's Other Monuments notes all the heartfelt tributes made to these "unknown" victims of violence. (We have the same tributes in British Columbia, Canada.)

You are not forgotten.

The Diesel Tree

Grow Your Own Oil

You’d have thought that with 20,000 stories in our archives we might’ve at least mentioned this in passing. But it seems not. Australian farmers in the wet tropical region of North Queensland have bought over 20,000 of these so-called diesel trees. The intention is that in 15 or so years they’ll have their very own oil mine growing on their farmland.

National Geographic Lampooned

An April Fool's parody

It looks like a typical National Geographic magazine cover with the signature yellow border. So what's Paris Hilton doingparody, National Geographic, Paris Hilton, April Fool's, lampoon, Harvard on there?

The folks at the Cambridge, Massachussetts-based Harvard Lampoon persuaded National Geographic employees to help them ensure their April Fools' parody—with satire on Mongolia's wildest water parks and "Native Girls Gone Wild"—looked authentic.

The issue, out today, is the latest in a string of magazine parodies by editors of the student-run Lampoon. But the long-running satire magazine had never done National Geographic.

His virtual Museum of Art

Sergey Tyukanov was born May 17, 1955, in Poronaisk, Russia. In 1981 he received his Master's Degree in the graphic arts. Since then he has lived and worked in Kaliningrad.

“Each person has his or her own idea of the world. Pictures are the window to the world of the artist, who has an opportunity to create things that are impossible in the real world.  My world is the world of the metamorphosis and paradox, which are reality for me, and this reality I materialize in my works. I like to be surprised and astonished, I like to surprise and astonish myself. Creativity should inspire and arouse creativeness. I invite you to travel in the world of my fantasies.”

How to Take a Picture of the Steam from your Meals

Being an avid photographer of late, I found this article to be of interest. Hope you do too.

Step 1 Materials
Here is what you will need:

* Window/door where the light shines through
* Hot food/beverage
* Spot to place your food where it is in direct range of the sunlight
* Camera
* Morning/Evening time slot.

Step 2 Find a Window
Find a window in your house that lets the light in well. I have a door near my kitchen table, so the light flows in nicely. Find a time when it is either morning, or evening. This way, you can catch the sun's direct rays as it is rising or setting.

Step 3 Grab your Camera
Once you have a good window of light shining through to where your food it, walk to the opposite side of the food from where it is getting the direct light.

So if the window is shining on the right side of the plate, move to the left side to take the picture: and vice versa.

Take your picture with a decent camera that can focus pretty well. If you can see the steam rising from the hot platter of food; you are in the right spot.

Take the snapshot, and there you go.

Guys, take note

Body Hair: 5 areas that make women cringe

Butt Hair

The second most commonly detested area for male body hair is undoubtedly the buttocks. Though less offensive than back hair, butt bangs are not an attractive feature. Molly, 29, is not a fan. “When a man has a whole bunch of hair growing out of the top of his butt, that you can see when his shirt lifts up, I don’t like that.” Other women agreed. “When you’re feeling a boy’s butt and your hand is covered in hair...that’s disgusting,” said Carrie. Having a baboon butt is a bit of a sticky situation because no self-respecting man is going shave his behind on a regular basis. Waxing and laser removal are expensive but viable options to consider. However, if you feel comfortable with your tush toupee or feel there are just too many trees to clear the forest, butt hair is not the worst thing you can have. “I can stand a little bum hair,” said Mackenzie, but quickly added, “But too much makes me gag.”

Throwing bones in the air as 2001 turns 40

My God, it's full of stars!

STANLEY KUBRICK's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY had its world premiere April 2, 1968, at the Uptown Theater in Washington, D.C. Which would mean that Roger Ebert had been in the Sun-Times pages for just over a year when this review ran: "It was e. e. cummings, the poet, who said he'd rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach 10,000 stars how not to dance. I imagine cummings would not have enjoyed Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A SpaceOdyssey, in which stars dance but birds do not sing. The fascinating thing about this film is that it fails on the human level but succeeds magnificently on a cosmic scale."

There’s More to Productivity Than Time Management

What does it mean to be productive?

A typical definition might be something like, “Getting the most done in the least possible time.” In a workplace context, this means one and only one thing: more work. If the process for a task can be streamlined so it can be done in half the time, then you can have your employees do that task twice as many times.

Shutter (2008)

Watch Ring instead

horror, Asian, thriller, photos, ghost, revengeAmerican movie companies have to stop remaking Japanese/Asian movies. It was fun at first with Ring. Now, with Shutter, this trend has become staler than old bread. I had the "honor" of seeing this movie with a friend. She insisted on seeing it - inspite of my pointing out that this was going to be an awful movie. Hint: it was not screened for the critics. Well, she got the message thirty minutes through the movie. A waste of money and time. Avoid Shutter at all costs.

You Use It Every Day. But Can You Make It Cook?

For years, I hadn’t used my microwave for much besides reheating leftovers and softening ice cream. I make popcorn the real way, I steam my vegetables on the stovetop, and everyone knows a potato doesn’t really bake in a microwave.

But after all, the thing is sitting there, built into my wall. You have one, too, unless it broke and you haven’t replaced it (understandable but unusual). Shouldn’t you be using it for more than reheating coffee?

A Toot and a Snore in '74

The John Lennon/Paul McCartney jam Session

A Toot and a Snore in '74 is a rare bootleg album of the one and only jam session in which John Lennon and Paul McCartney played together after the break-up of the Beatles. First mentioned by Lennon in a 1975 intervieJohn Lennon, Paul McCartney, jam session, toot, snore, impromptuw[citation needed], details were brought to light in May Pang's 1983 book, Loving John, and it gained wider prominence when McCartney made reference to the session in a 1997 interview. Discussing with Australian writer Sean Sennett in his Soho office, McCartney claimed the 'session was hazy... for a number of reasons'. The story is corroborated by biographies such as Christopher Sandford's 2006 McCartney.

Lennon was producing Harry Nilsson's latest album, Pussy Cats, when Paul and Linda McCartney dropped in on the Burbank Studios session on March 28, 1974. They were joined by Stevie Wonder, Harry Nilsson, Jesse Ed Davis, May Pang, Bobby Keys and producer Ed Freeman for an impromptu jam session.

Lennon was in his "lost weekend", separated from Yoko Ono and living in Los Angeles with May Pang. Sandford paints the scene very vividly, as the room froze when McCartney walked in, and remained perfectly silent un
il Lennon said, "Valiant Paul McCartney, I presume?" McCartney responded: "Sir Jasper Lennon, I presume?" ("Valiant Paul" and "Sir Jasper" were characters played by the two, in a televised Christmas play early in the Beatles's career.) McCartney extended a hand, Lennon shook it, and the mood was pleasant but subdued, cordial but not especially warm, at least initially.

What followed was not very productive. Lennon sounds to be on cocaine—he can be heard offering Wonder a snort on the first track, and on the fifth, asks someone to give him a snort. This is also the origin of the album name, where John Lennon clearly asks: "You wanna snort, Steve? A toot? It's goin' round." In addition, Lennon seems to be having trouble with his microphone and headphones.

Lennon is on lead vocal and guitar, while McCartney sings harmony and plays drums. Stevie Wonder sings and plays electric piano, Linda McCartney on organ, May Pang on tambourine, Harry Nilsson provides vocals, Jesse Ed Davis is on guitar, producer Ed Freeman fills in on bass, Bobby Keyes plays saxophone.

The top 100 April Fool's Day Hoaxes

Isn't it appropriate that the month of the tax begins with April Fool's Day and ends with cries of "May Day!"?

 #1: The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest
spaghetti harvest In 1957 the respected BBC news show Panorama announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in. Many called the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this the BBC diplomatically replied that they should "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best."

Old World Radio

The Golden Age of Radio!

radio, Shadow, mystery, science fiction, drama, entertainmentWelcome to OldRadioWorld.com! Here at OldRadioWorld.com you will find some of the most popular radio programs of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Before television, radio provided entertainment by presenting radio plays and programs of mystery, intrigue, and comedy. Of course, news was present as were many soap operas.

"The Shadow" - One of the most popular radio shows in history. The show went on the air in August of 1930.

"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" The opening lines of the "Detective Story" program captivated listeners and are instantly recognizable even today. Originally the narrator of the series of macabre tales, the eerie voice known as The Shadow became so popular to listeners that "Detective Story" was soon renamed "The Shadow," and the narrator became the star of the old-time mystery radio series, which ran until 1954.

Agnes Moorehead, the first Margot LaneA figure never seen, only heard, the Shadow was an invincible crime fighter. He possessed many gifts which enabled him to overcome any enemy. Besides his tremendous strength, he could defy gravity, speak any language, unravel any code, and become invisible with his famous ability to "cloud men's minds."

Along with his team of operatives, the Shadow battled adversaries with chilling names like The Black Master, Kings of Crime, The Five Chameleons, and, of course, The
