Book examines McQueen and his cars

His real-life passion for speed meshed with his movie career. Now there's new insight into Steve McQueen's all-consuming hobby.

Steve McQueen was not only an international film superstar -- he was a dyed-in-the-wool car and Steve McQueen, machines, book, cars, bikes, moviesmotorcycle racer and enthusiast. His stardom allowed him to weave his career and his passion together.

"As he launched his own production company and was doing his own films, he was able to influence those scripts and those parts," said author Matt Stone. "And naturally he put cars and bikes and dune-buggies and stuff into them. And invariably, he also put himself behind the wheel."

For his new book, "McQueen's Machines," veteran journalist Matt Stone pored over hundreds of McQueen family photos, interviewed dozens of friends and colleagues, and got the stamp of approval from Steve McQueen's son Chad, who wrote the book's foreword.
