Masada (1981)

What have we won? We've won a rock in the middle of a wasteland.

As I was away on my trip, I could not finish Jerry Goldsmith week. Here is the final installment (more for another time).

After the destruction of the Second Temple, 900 Jewish zealots hold out against a 5000 man Roman legion on the mountaintop fortress of Masada.

Freddy Krueger Nikes

Freddy Kreuger, shoes, blood, skin, sweater, NikeFreddy Krueger is still alive. In shoes. The shoes have Freddy's green-red striped sweater pattern with blood spatters, and the soles are red - blood! The insoles represent Freddy's skin. Looks nice, but not for me. Too geeky looking, although they represent a horror icon.

The Dark House Quarter

If Jules Verne was the devil, then Stephen Rothwell could easily be his, um…apprentice?

The monstrous photo collages at Rothwell’s Dark House Quarter mix Victorian-era goth and steampunk fantasy with just a pinch of Hellraiser thrown in to scare the Bejesus out of you.

Luckily, I had my Bejesus removed two summers ago. Not a complete success I might add.

Mother's Day

To My Mother

For all the times you gently picked me up,
When I fell down,
For all the times you tied my shoes
And tucked me into bed,
Or needed something
But put me first instead.
For everything we shared,
The dreams, the laughter,
And the tears,
I love you with a "Special Love"
That deepens every year.

Lost

I have not bashed Lost the last two weeks. I thought I would give it a chance, see how it went. But nothing has changed. It is still as boring as ever. I have to admit that the episode two weeks ago, when the soldiers attacked Locke's camp, made for some excitement. But it fizzled quickly. The inter-play between the characters has ceased. It used to be that the characters provided the tension. Their motives and objectives drove the show. Now, the gimmick drives the show.

(Before you proceed, note that some story hints are given.)

How to turn your boring movie into a Hitchcock thriller...

This applies to Lost as well.

Alfred Hitchcock was the Master of Suspense. A title well earned. His movies and TV series always kept me on edge. Even to this day. Hitchcock never went out of his way to create suspense. He used the ordinary to do it. It might be a casual glance, or a bag sitting under a table. He played on the emotions of his audience. Hitchcock knew what made us tick, and he used it well. So, what did he know? Read on. You too, Lost writers.

Whatever happened to Spencer Elden?

Spencer Elden (born on 9th July 1991) is the model who appeared on the cover of Nirvana’s album Nevermind. Nirvana considered using a stock photograph of a swimming baby, but when that proved too expensive, they hired photographer Kirk Weddle. Weddle’s friends, Renata and Rick Elden, allowed their son Spencer to be photographed for about $200. The hook, line, and dollar were superimposed later. After seeing the photo, Kurt Cobain (Nirvana’s lead singer) and his wife Courtney Love agreed that they would take Spencer out to dinner when he got older. Kurt is not around to do it now, and poor Spencer if he goes out with Courtney.

Spencer is now a teenager, finishing high school.

The Mystery of the Photograph

Does learning the story behind a photograph change your perception and appreciation of the image? Is mystery important? Does it kill the mystery?

My answer: It depends on the photograph, and it depends on the story.
